The primary purpose of the Church Action Network (CAN) is to serve as a cooperative church network in which members can share experiences and best practices, help and support one another as they educate, organize, and advocate, and stay informed about what each church is doing and the overall progress of Sharing Jerusalem’s activities.

The Church Action Network can be valuable in a variety of ways.

  • You can contact our SJ Facilitator, Rev. Monroe Wright, to discuss your church’s plans and ask him for advice on possible speakers, educational materials, and long-term strategies.

  • CAN can help transcend any feeling of isolation in pursuing Middle East peace by demonstrating that there is a solidarity network of like-minded individuals and churches that are willing to learn and act on this issue together. We cannot effectively influence our government’s policies on this issue unless we mobilize our forces on an ecumenical, and eventually an interfaith, basis.
  • CAN provides an infrastructure for using the Internet to share information - effectively and with the least amount of “pain and effort” - as you work to educate and energize your church.

  • In addition to Internet-based communication, CAN holds full-member meetings twice a year to allow members to share experiences and develop a consensus on overall strategy. Our first two CAN meetings were attended by over 60 people who gathered together to share their Middle East peace activities and listen to both internal and external speakers. At the first meeting, we heard from Corinne Whitlach, former Executive Director of Churches for Middle East Peace, and Reverend John Peterson, Canon for Global Justice of the Washington National Cathedral. At the second meeting, representatives from Church of the Savior and Dumbarton United Methodist Church shared with us the exciting activities their churches have been involved with, including education, art, music, advocacy, and speakers.

Please let us know if you are interested in helping us plan for the next CAN meeting which will be held this spring. Also, be sure to let our Facilitator know if you would like to host a CAN meeting at your church.
