Background of the Conflict

FAQs

If you’re new to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, we have provided two resources to jump-start your understanding of the conflict and some of the common myths that surround it.

  • The Background of the Conflict gives you a condensed history of the conflict, plus a discussion of the problems and possibilities of a two-state solution – such as settlements, refugees, and the status of Jerusalem. The content is taken from the study guide that accompanies the DVD, Searching for Peace in the Middle East, produced in 2006 by Landrum Bolling and the Foundation for Middle East Peace.
  • The FAQs page provides brief answers to some of the questions that people most frequently ask about the conflict.

However, the good news is that there is a wealth of reliable information available on the Internet and there are many local, regional, and national events that you can attend to learn more about Middle East peace efforts and meet others who are involved in this issue.

  • Check our Speeches, Articles, and Reports page for links to peace groups and a list of recent relevant articles, speeches, and reports. These resources provide you with information from many perspectives – including Christian, Jewish-American, Arab-American, Israeli, Palestinian, interfaith, and secular peace groups.
  • Check our Sharing Jerusalem Events page to find out when and where Sharing Jerusalem and its cosponsoring organizations are holding events in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

An excellent way to meet others, learn about the current status of the conflict, and find concrete ways to take action that makes a difference is to attend our monthly Give Peace a Chance campaign prayer services and educational workshops. Each service/workshop focuses on a specific “condition on the ground” in Israel-Palestine – such as settlements, suicide bombers, checkpoints, and rockets fired from Gaza into Israel. Check our 2008 Campaign page for more details about the Give Peace a Chance campaign and check the Campaign Calendar for specific event information.
